eBay bans Jeffrey Dahmer Halloween costumes amid Netflix Monster Surge

Jeffrey Dahmer costume bids on eBay.com are being withdrawn this Halloween season. The popular e-commerce site has issued a ban on Dahmer costumes because they violate its policy on violent and violent criminals, Buzzfeed News confirms. Following Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starring Evan Peters as the serial killer, a wave of offers for Dahmer-related costumes hit the site.

As reported by Buzzfeed, “A spokesperson confirmed that the selling platform was actively removing these listings and that they were ‘banned’, although some listings were still active at the time of publication… Company policy states that sellers are prohibited from listing such items’ Promote or glorify violence’ or be associated with violent individuals, the acts they are known for, or crime scenes over the past 100 years.”

diversity has reached out to eBay officials for further comment.

Interest in Dahmer has skyrocketed because of Netflix’s Monster, which now surpasses Stranger Things 4 as the streamer’s most-watched English-language original series. The series has clocked well over 700 million hours of viewing since it launched on September 21st.

A Dahmer-related costume on eBay that was removed was directly related to the Netflix series as it was a mask worn by actor Evan Peters in the role of Dahmer.

Dahmer murdered and dismembered 17 people between 1978 and 1991. His victims were all men or boys. The Netflix series has received backlash from several family members of Dahmer’s real victims. Shirley Hughes, whose son was murdered by Dahmer in 1991, recently told TMZ that it was “evil” that the Netflix series’ popularity meant people were now wanting to dress up as Dahmer. She added that if Netflix didn’t stream the series, there would be no Dahmer costumes this year.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is now streaming in full on Netflix.
