(Warning: Light spoilers for Netflix “Wednesday” ahead.)
What would a Tim Burton project be without Easter Eggs? The new series, Wednesday, is teeming with them, from callouts to the TV shows, the movies, and everything Tim Burton-related. Production designer Mark Scruton filled the Netflix show with fun references for those familiar with the other versions.
In the Addams Family spin-off, Jenna Ortega plays Wednesday Addams, who is sent to Nevermore Academy where she tries to master her newfound psychic abilities and solve a murder mystery tied to her family’s past.
There are countless teasers and references throughout the eight-part series, including teasers in the opening credits, the city of Jericho where the “normies” live, storefronts like the flower shop, the cobbler, and the thrift store that are straight out of the original Charles Addams, plus a shrunken head in Principal Weems’ office, a reference to Beetlejuice.
Here are a few that have been spotted.
Speak with Diversity, Scruton revealed that This Wednesday’s Weathervanes cafe and Nevermore students often have classic Tim Burton teasers.
All kinds of metal weathervanes are screwed to the wall. They were designed by Scruton based on Burton’s other films: a headless horseman from Sleepy Hollow and Willy Wonka’s hat.
Wednesday hates anything to do with pilgrims and colonialism. Transferred to her new school, Nevermore, Wednesday learns that the nearest amusement park is Pilgrim World.
The theme park is a reference to the Addams Family Values movie sequel, when Wednesday and her brother Pugsley are sent to Camp Chippewa. It’s a place no one can bear, especially Wednesday, which burns down the pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving.
The ever-curious Wednesday learns that Nevermore Academy has a secret society. The audience first learns of the entrance leading to a hidden passage when Marilyn Thornhill, played by Christina Ricci, stands in front of it. Two simple finger snaps open the entrance.
The two snaps are reminiscent of the Addams Family theme song with the famous finger click.
Another subtle nod to “Addams Family Values” comes when Wednesday picks up an archery bow. Pugsley and Wednesday show off their archery skills in the Tim Burton film. As Wednesday reads a letter from Uncle Fester, Pugsley shoots down an American bald eagle.
Scruton teases that the gargoyles in the quad are a big reference to the series. “The gargoyles relate to different characters, and there’s a big plot point hidden in there.”
When audiences first meet Wednesday’s brother Pugsley in the film, he has an apple in his mouth and is tied up as she shoots an arrow at him.
In the first episode, Wednesday opens her locker to find Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) tied up with an apple in her mouth. This starts the chain of events that sends Wednesday to Nevermore Academy.
