June Brownbest known for his role as Dot Cotton on the British soap opera EastEnders, died at the age of 95. A true legend for fans of British soap operas, Dot Cotton was known for her distinctive hairdo, chain smoking and biting sense of humour. Brown was with the show from its beginnings in 1985 to 1993 and then rejoined the show from 1997 to 2020.
Brown was born in Suffolk in 1927 and led an interesting life. During the Second World War she joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service where she worked as a ‘cine-wren’ projecting instructional videos for seafarers preparing to go to sea. When the war ended, she joined London’s Old Vic Theater School, where she began her long acting career.
Notable early roles included an appearance in 1973 Doctor Who The Time Warriors series, parts in show The Bill, Coronation Streetand minder, as well as many film appearances (including a hilarious role in the Mr. Bean film).
Brown will always be remembered for bringing Dot Cotton to life. The character quickly became one of the most popular characters in British television history. For her work as Dot, Brown won Best Actress at the 2005 Inside Soap Awards and later won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Soap Awards. The greatest honor came in 2008 when the Queen made her a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
Brown recalled there being some awkwardness at the ceremony:
When called, I tripped over the step in front of her and nearly fell. She said something about how she was enjoying EastEnders and for some reason I replied “I didn’t think you would see it because it conflicts with your dinner.” I didn’t even call her ma’am or your majesty, so I later thought of writing her to apologize. But I suppose I at least made her laugh.
Tributes have been flooded from across British television. the EastEnders The Twitter account said there aren’t enough words to describe her:
Comedian Sooz Kempner said goodbye to a legend.
TV critic Scott Bryan posted a great clip of Brown meeting Lady Gaga The Graham Norton Show.
And comedian Mo Gilligan described her career as “amazing.”
June Brown lived from 1927 to 2022 until the age of 95. May she rest in peace.
