EA shuts down online servers for several NHL games on June 6th. Players have until this date to play various legacy NHL games online. After that, you can only play the affected ice hockey titles offline. Time for some last minute games.
Over on its online service updates page, EA announced that NHL 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 online servers will be shutting down on June 6th on all platforms. The sports gaming giant revealed that this is because “the daily active player base” in these titles “has reached a very low number” and that EA “can no longer guarantee a quality online experience”.
With new NHL games being released each year, it’s understandable that the number of online players in older titles will decrease. Still, it’s disappointing when online servers retire for any game. This means that a large part of what made a game is no longer available to play.
As you can see in the long list of EA titles with online games removed linked above, the shutdown of online servers is a by-product of games moving online. It becomes unsustainable for companies to keep expensive servers running when new releases must be the priority. At least we can still rink online in newer NHL games.
