Despite his long-standing ties to the Philadelphia 76ers, Sixers legend Julius Irving (Dr. J) chose Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic over 76ers big man Joel Embiid.
As the NBA season draws to a close, MVP votes will be cast by everyone watching the game. Three big men continue to dominate this conversation – Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic – but Jokic was a clear front runner in the face of another strong season.
And despite his loyalty to the ’76ers, Dr. J to. The legendary small forward, who played for Philadelphia from 1976 to 1987, revealed that while he hopes Embiid wins, Jokic is the most deserving candidate in 2022.
“I’m confident Embiid will win because he’s talking about it and it’s something — it’s one of those carrot tops he’s reaching for — but I think the most deserving guy is Jokic,” Erving told Rich Eisen. “He never missed a game and night after night he did better than last year – and last year he was MVP!” Erving chuckled. “As you get better I don’t think you lose status, not if it’s a fair fight.”
“I will choose Embiid because he is my type and Antetokounmpo who knows how he will end up? But Embiid and Antetokounmpo missed several game weeks. Jokic was out there every night.”
dr J draws for Joel Embiid, but Nikola Jokic is “the most deserving” MVP
The general consensus in the NBA tends to agree with Erving: Nikola Jokic remains the front-runner for 2021-22 MVP.
A recent ESPN straw poll found Jokic as the eventual winner, with Jokic winning 62 out of 100 votes in his third and final straw poll of the season. In the second poll conducted in mid-February, Embiid came out ahead of Jokic, but Jokic has come out on top ever since.
Although Embiid’s storyline and playstyle were nothing short of admirable that year, with Embiid largely credited with leading the 76ers to the NBA playoffs, Jokic was a picture of strength and consistency. And Jokic has his own difficulties this year too. Without Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray, Jokic found a way to up his game – and like Dr. J noted he was last year’s MVP.
what dr J’s voice indicates that while he would like to see a Philly man win, the award should go back to the Denver nominee.
