Double killer Donald Grant executed by lethal injection in Oklahoma

McALESTER, Okla. – An Oklahoma man who asked for execution by firing squadto be lead to death by lethal injection on Thursday morning, officials said.

Donald Anthony Grant, 46, was pronounced dead at 10:16 a.m. CST at the Oklahoma State Prison, a state corrections agency spokesman announced.

The execution began at 10:03 a.m. and Grant was pronounced unconscious at 10:08 a.m. before his death at 10:16 a.m., said Department of Corrections Superintendent Scott Crow.

There were 18 witnesses to the execution, including news reporters, prosecutors, the sheriff, and loved ones of Grant and his victims.

When asked if he would give his final speech, Grant rambled on for more than two minutes with sporadic phrases like, “Yo, I get it,” “Nothing” and “I did this.” before.”

His microphone was cut off, but Grant continued to speak even as the execution took place. There were times when tears rolled down his face.

Grant killed Brenda McElyea, 29, and Felicia Suzette Smith, 43, so there would be no witnesses to his robbery at La Quinta Inn in Del City in July 2001.

“While Donald Grant’s execution did not bring Brenda back, it allowed us all to finally move forward knowing that justice has been served,” said Shirl Pilcher, a sister of McElyea. with reporters..

Grant is the first person to be executed in the United States this year and the third in Oklahoma since the state resumed the death penalty after a six-year hiatus last October.

Subsidies and another death row inmate, Gilbert Postelleasked a federal judge to grant them a temporary order that would delay their execution until a trial can be held on whether Oklahoma’s lethal triple injection method constitutional or not.

They offered to be killed by firing squad as an alternative, claiming it would be quicker and less painful.

A trial on the matter is set to begin February 28. But Grant’s execution is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. CST and Postelle’s death date is set for February 17.

But US Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay at Grant’s execution.

Grant’s death marks the 1,541st execution since continued the death penalty in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
