Marcus Smart has strong arguments for why he should win DPOY. Speaking to ESPN Broadcaster on Twitter, Doris Burke added her take on why he should win too.
Doris Burke and Malika Andrews chatted live twitter room and debated who should be named Defensive Player of the Year. Burke argued why Marcus Smart should receive this award and why she voted for him.
“I think a couple of things, I think the metrics for defense are tough. It’s a perimeter based game. And for far too long we haven’t given these grinders, the Mikal Bridges and Marcus Smarts, their due,” Burke said. “The amount of space you have to cover, the number of screens you have to go through. It takes physical and emotional stability and endurance. And I just thought it was about time.”
The Boston Celtics are #1 on defense and that’s largely due to Smart. Smart has a plus-1.7 defensive plus-minus rating and he averages 1.5 steals per game. With Smart and Robert Williams, the Celtics became a defensive threat. And they were able to turn their season after the All-Star hiatus and secure the No. 2 seed.
NBA legends agree Marcus Smart should be named Defensive Player of the Year
No guard has won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 26 years. The last guard to win the DPOY was Gary Payton for the 1995/96 season. The award is usually given to centers or power forewords. It was Payton’s turn SiriusXM NBA Radio and offered his thoughts on why Smart should win the award.
“He earns [Defensive Player of the Year]. If you change your offense because of a guy, you should do that.”
Smart is notoriously a nuisance defensively on both ends of the floor, and as Payton mentioned, when a team changes offense because of Smart, it can be argued why Smart deserves the accolade.
