Donald Trump said Monday the FBI had conducted a search of his home at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.
According to the New York Times, two people familiar with the matter said the search appeared to have focused on classified documents Trump brought to Mar-a-Lago after he left the White House. The Associated Press reports that the Justice Department was investigating whether Trump still had any records in his possession after the National Archives and Records Administration said it found 15 boxes of classified materials at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
The former president also issued a statement on the search, calling it a “raid” and comparing the situation to Watergate.
“Having worked and cooperated with appropriate government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate,” Trump wrote in the statement, according to the Times. “They even broke into my safe! How is it different from Watergate, where agents broke into the Democratic National Committee? Here, conversely, Democrats broke into the home of the 45th President of the United States.”
The FBI’s search comes as the House of Representatives continues to investigate the events of Jan. 6, when the Capitol was attacked while Congress counted Electoral College votes to cement President Joe Biden’s victory. Trump’s role in the attack was the focus of much discussion during the hearings, with many of his closest advisers testifying.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond diversity‘s request for comment. According to the Associated Press, a DOJ spokesman declined to comment on the situation.
