Seven-year-old Johnny told 7NEWS he only had a few words left for his spelling homework.

“I had three words left in sentence 11 and then I had sentence 12,” he said.

“And then Olive just ate my homework.”

His mother Emily came home to a “devastated” Johnny whose hard work was ruined by the hungry terrier.

But it was just a coincidence that the red-pawed terrier was caught by home security cameras chewing down the boy’s spelling.

“We came home to poor Johnny in tears because the dog actually ate his homework,” she said.

“He was actually devastated. He was desperately trying to get this unit completed by the end of the year and he was so close.

“But luckily the security camera charged inside for the first time and we caught the act.”

Emily, concerned that Johnny’s teacher might not be persuaded by “the oldest apology in the book,” decided she had to step in.

She emailed his teacher and attached the video of Olive making a dog breakfast out of Johnny’s hard work as proof.

And the family has decided to keep the indoor camera permanent in case Olive gets a taste for study materials.

“You have your own dog food, Olive,” Johnny said.
