Voice chat is a fairly standard feature in online multiplayer games and can prove to be an integral part of a team’s success. In games like Battlefield, where teams and squads need to coordinate their actions to either attack or defend bases, it’s a pretty invaluable tool for making sure everyone is on the same page. Oddly enough, despite the introduction of a new mode, Hazard Zone, where proper team communication/coordination becomes even more important since each player only has a single life, Battlefield 2042 didn’t launch with this feature. However, DICE has confirmed that voice chat will appear in an update in early April.
Until it arrives, there are a few alternative methods of in-game communication that you can use. The most obvious thing to do is invite at least your squadmates to a party on the console you’re playing on. Xbox and PlayStation each have their own party systems, but it’s worth noting that you can only invite people to your console party who play on the same console as you. Because of this, you may want to disable crossplay to ensure that everyone you meet in-game is playing on the same console as you and can therefore join your party.
If you’re playing on PC, you won’t have native party chat capability like Xbox or PlayStation, so you’ll want to use third-party apps like Discord to potentially set up a voice call with your teammates. If you plan on playing with friends, this is the preferred way, but casual players might not be receptive to the idea of joining a voice call with strangers. There is also the caveat that not every PC gamer has a Discord account; Discord is a good solution, but not perfect. If all else fails you can resort to the game’s text chat, but reading and typing in the heat of the moment is a surefire way to get killed here, so this should only be used in moments of downtime.
