The Los Angeles Dodgers promoted former major league mainstay Brandon Gomes to general manager, the team announced Tuesday. Gomes has been an assistant general manager since 2019. The Dodgers have operated without a general manager since Farhan Zaidi left to join a rival. San Francisco Giants in November 2018.
“He’s had an incredible impact on everything he touches,” The Dodgers President of Baseball Operations, Andrew Friedman, told Jack Harris about LA time. “He moves pretty fast, but you could argue he can move even faster.”
Gomes, 37, retired as a player in 2016 and joined the Dodgers the following year. He quickly rose from pitching coordinator, player development director to vice president and assistant general manager. Gomes turned down the opportunity to interview with New York Mets for their baseball executive chairman job ahead of this season amid speculation that the Dodgers will soon promote him.
“This is something that since I finished playing I was hoping to achieve at some point in my career,” Gomes said to Harris. “It’s just something that will be incredibly satisfying, to continue to work with this group with the goal of winning as many championships as possible.”
Although the Dodgers have not had a general manager from 2019-21, the club has no shortage of brain resources. Friedman oversaw baseball activities, formerly Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres general manager Josh Byrnes as executive vice president of baseball, Gomes and Jeffrey Kingston as assistant general manager.
In addition to Gomes, the Dodgers also promoted Alex Slater from director of baseball operations to vice president and assistant general manager on Tuesday. The team also hired Damon Jones from NFLWashington’s soccer team and appointed him as vice president, assistant general manager, and baseball legal counsel. He was a former general counsel of the WFT.
Gomes achieved an ERA of 4.20 in 167 reliefs with Tampa Bay Rays from 2011-15. As general manager of Rays, Friedman acquired Gomes from San Diego in a Jason Bartlett deal in December 2010. The two overlapped with Tampa until Friedman left to join the Dodgers in October 2014.
The Dodgers won 106-56 in 2021, but finished second in the NL West ahead of Zaidi’s 107-win Giants. Los Angeles has advanced to the NLCS 2021 for the fifth time in the past six years after winning the 2020 World Series.
