Do you recognize this man? (It’s Chris Hemsworth)

The images of Hemsworth in his sunset years appear in episode four of the National Geographic series, which airs all six episodes on Disney+ on Wednesday. The show produced by Black Swan filmmakers Darren Aronofsky, shows Hemsworth exploring the aging process with doctors and researchers and engaging in challenges, travel and training aimed at extending lifespans as long as possible.

In episode four, the actor, still in superhero state for the Marvel movies, spends time in a retirement home wearing a bulky suit designed to mimic the effects of a few years of wear and tear on his body. He’s not used to being physically unable to do things. Thor might have rocked an on-screen dadbod at some point, but not Hemsworth.

“I said to Darren, ‘Look, should I do that? Plot like I’m in this situation and I’m dying?’ And he said, ‘No,’ and I said, ‘Fine, because that would be super corny and weird,'” says Hemsworth. “He said, ‘If you think it’s funny, think it’s funny. Join us for the ride. But we want to see your real reaction to it.’ And yes, certain moments surprised me and certain moments were ridiculous and hilarious and absurd — that’s life.”

As part of this, the production satirized some images of the actor in his later years, some a best-case scenario, others a little less generous. The images are digital recreations, no makeup.

As he flips through them, he chooses the most extreme, showing it in its thinnest and most weathered form. “This…” he says, wincing. “Took my hair off.”

Hemsworth reckons this recovery could be what he looks like at 90.

While Hemsworth wore no makeup or prosthetics for these images, his wife also attended the episode and went through a physical aging process to surprise him for a sequence set at a rest-home dance.

In the scene, she has her back turned to him as he approaches, then turns to show what she might look like decades from now. What happens next will be revealed by the series, but suffice it to say he’s not “running for the mountains” either. They posed for a photo together – she in age make-up and he looked like he does now – then the producers had him digitally aged for a second image as well.
