DJ Jazzy Jeff says Will Smith hit Chris Rock to protect his family

DJ Jazzy Jeff once again defends his best friend and frequent collaborator Will Smith. The slap in the face, which can be heard worldwide, is apparently still a trend topic. During a recent interview, the legendary record producer claimed the King Richard star “slapped” Mike Tyson, referencing the tale that Smith attacked Chris Rock for towering over the veteran comedian.

“I’ve had people go, ‘Oh, he wouldn’t have done that to a gangsta,'” Jeff said while appearing on the Faq podcast. “Let me tell you something about Will. Will is someone who did a cliff jump in Jamaica and couldn’t swim. Will was the person he runs to, whatever he’s scared of. I don’t have that in me. I don’t have that in me at all. I’ve seen Will nearly die many times running straight.”

Jeff firmly believed the ‘Bad Boys’ star would have attacked anyone, regardless of size, if it meant protecting loved ones, adding: “Will would have slapped Mike Tyson in the face. It didn’t matter who was there. Will would have had his ass spanked, but he would do what he would do regardless of who it was.

The “Summertime” musician claimed that Smith’s actions “were not for fakers. It wasn’t for show. It was–I have to protect. If that was a grizzly bear, he would have done it. I know him. And it wasn’t about who’s tougher, who’s tough…who is that? It’s like, if someone messed with your kid, you would do whatever you had to do.”

Still, he admitted he didn’t condone his friend’s actions but understood the experiences Smith went through that may have laid the groundwork for an incident like this. “That was all. It was a poor choice of judgment,” he added.

While many have chosen sides, social media users seemed to appreciate the insights from the person who has known the Men in Black star for almost 40 years.

“Jeff always seems to have good answers to things,” wrote one YouTube user. “As a DJ, I hear a lot of his perspectives and opinions on DJ culture and its community. Another great perspective… I’ve always wanted to hear what he thinks about the Will incident. Jeff is a class for sure.”

Smith rallied and continues to face immense backlash after slapping Rock after the actor poked fun at his wife’s shaved head. He has since apologized to the Academy and the actor, and was banned from all Oscar-related events for the next decade. DJ Jazzy Jeff says Will Smith hit Chris Rock to protect his family
