Disney edits graphic violence from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Two scenes from the Disney Plus MCU TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier appear to have been revised to remove depictions of graphic violence.

The changes appear to coincide with the streaming platform’s new parental controls for R-Rated and TV-MA content, updated March 15 after adding several Marvel television series that originally aired on Netflix, including daredevil, jessica jones, iron fistand Luke cage.

Online viewers have cited two scenes in the third episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, “Power Broker”, as proof of these changes. The first shows Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl), the Dr. Shoots Wilfred Nagel, a former Hydra scientist trying to recreate the Super Soldier Serum. The original scene features an open-eyed shot of Nagel’s body covered in blood, while the remastered scene currently running on Disney Plus shows no blood on Nagel’s body and his eyes are closed.

The latter scene features Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) defending himself with a whistle before throwing it at an attacker who shoots a gun at him. In the original scene, the pipe impales the attacker’s soldier and pins him to a shipping container behind him, while in the now revised scene, the pipe ricochets off the attacker’s shoulder and they slump against the container. YouTuber Thomas Nute posted a comparison video of the changes between the original scene and the remastered scene on Disney Plus, and Polygon reviewed the scenes in question on Disney Plus to confirm these changes.

As Disney Plus continues to grow, the addition of new content outside of the company’s otherwise family-friendly tone may be subject to such retrospective changes in the future. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is rated TV-14 for language and violence.

Polygon has reached out to Disney for comment on these changes and will update when the company responds.
