Sri Lanka put in an excellent performance with both the racquet and the ball which helped them win the second Test against Australia at the Galle International Stadium. The hosts had recovered from the disappointment of the first Test and fought hard to secure the match by one innings and 39 runs.

Another very interesting thing happened during the game. Dinesh Chandimal was instrumental with his first double century, which also made him his country’s first to do so against Australia. He went unbeaten on 206* as the Lions racked up a mammoth 554/10 in their first innings and took a 190-run lead.

Chandimal also surpassed the legendary Kumar Sangakkara, who held the record for the highest singles score in the Test against Australia. Sangakkara had 192 runs in Perth in 2007.

In the over by Mitchell Starc, Chandimal batted 185 at that point, with the Lankers already losing nine wickets. He smashed the Aussie Pacer for a four followed by a couple of sixes on back-to-back balls and reached the double century.

But one of the sixes was so huge that it crossed the stadium and landed in front of it. But the ball had also hit a passer-by.

It was debutant Prabath Jayasuriya, who was also the star of the show for the lankers. His excellent spin attack resulted in Australian batters being caught off guard in both innings. In his debut game, he won six wickets in both innings and his 12-177 numbers are the best by a Sri Lankan debutant.

The Sri Lankans play Pakistan in the friendly series at home on Saturday 16 July.
