Lynchburg, Va. – Jackie Lerro helped Lynchburg University’s field hockey team score a hat-trick on Sunday to lead the Hornets to second-placed Rowan University, 4-3, at the Field Hockey Complex. Liberty University.
Lerro scored three times and also assisted in the winning goal in the 53rd minute, finding Emily Dudley for the Hornets’ fourth goal.
The win was Lynchburg’s first win over Rowan since 1983 and broke Profs’ 12-match unbeaten streak against the Hornets. That streak includes two losses to Rowan in 2018, including a season-ending loss in the Sweet Round of 16 of the NCAA Division III. It also takes the Hornets to 8-0 on Liberty University’s field since they began playing a series of annual home games at the facility in 2017.

Lerro was the spark for the Hornets from the start, firing three shots with a third that put Lynchburg 1-0 up 10 minutes into the match. In the second half, Lerro continued the attack with a second goal. her side in the afternoon thanks to the assistance of sophomore Kaylie Truitt, giving the Hornets a two-goal lead in the 21st minute.
Rowan (7-1) responded with a Kristiina Castognola goal from Casey Wagner’s assist, making it 2-1 for the Hornets before half-time.
One minute into the third half, sophomore Brittany Claybaugh fouled in front of the cage, leading to Lynchburg’s penalty goal as Lerro put the Hornets up to make it 3-1. The team responded with a goal from Bridget Guinan, cutting the score to 3-2 when the game was still 1/4.
After Lynchburg junior Hayden Shockley made a tackle, she sent the ball down the field, and the Hornets made several passes to put Dudley in front of the cage door, and juniors finished to win two goals back. the lead for Lynchburg.

Rowan last responded with a late Guinan goal to cut the Hornets’ lead into one of the final minutes of the game, but the Hornets continued.
