Did Ronda Rousey Actually Attack an Official at WWE SummerSlam?

Ronda Rousey was “suspended” by WWE for assaulting a referee at SummerSlam. Was the incident legitimate?

At WWE SummerSlam 2022, former MMA star Ronda Rousey looked to reclaim her SmackDown Women’s Title against Liv Morgan. In just under five minutes, Rousey put Morgan in an armbar, but her shoulders were on the mat and the ref went to three. Morgan was declared the winner, but controversy arose. Morgan tapped out before the official’s hand hit the mat for three.

Rousey was furious after her loss and attacked Morgan. She then turned her attention to the referee and placed him in an armbar.

WWE announced that Rousey has been suspended and fined for her actions. The news was picked up by multiple outlets, but was the incident legitimate?

Was Ronda Rousey right to attack a referee at SummerSlam?

This was not a legitimate incident. Rather, the attack happened in the plot. Apparently it’s supposed to turn Rousey into a heel (a villain).

In fact, Rousey is not expected to face a long ban. Dave Meltzer revealed further Wrestling Observer Radio said Rousey is booked for WWE’s next premium live event, Clash at the Castle, on September 3 in Cardiff, Wales.

“Not so long. She’s booked for the Cardiff show, so at least she won’t be suspended before then,” Meltzer said. h/t WrestleTalk.com. “I don’t know when she’s coming back, she’s going to be out, I don’t know how long, but it won’t be a month to put it that way because she has to come back for the pay-to-watch show.”

Rousey returned to WWE earlier this year where she won the Women’s Royal Rumble. After failing to defeat Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 38, she did so in an I-Quit match at WrestleMania Backlash last May. After defending her title against Natalya at Money in the Bank, Rousey lost to Morgan via roll-up after Morgan redeemed her Money in the Bank contract.

On the August 5 episode of SmackDown, there will be a seven-woman gauntlet match to determine the #1 contender for Morgan’s Clash at the Castle championship. The competitors in this match are Natalya, Raquel Rodriguez, Shayna Baszler, Sonya Deville, Shotzi, Aliyah and Xia Li.
