Former New York Yankees hitter Joey Gallo appeared to indirectly shoot at fans in the Bronx.
Gallo hit a home run for the Dodgers – his new team – earlier this week. As he did so, he received cheers from the home fans, which he admitted was a rarity for him this year.
The 28-year-old has been open about his struggles in New York. Frankly, some players can’t handle the day-to-day pressures that come with being a Yankee. You can add Gallo to this list.
Before the trade deadline, Gallo’s comments spoke to a degree of understanding – he was an underperformer with the Yankees. He struggled to come to terms with it, even days before he received treatment.
“Every time I see a Yankees hat, every time I see a Yankees jersey, I have to understand that.” Gallo said. “I didn’t play well as a Yankee. I wish I had.”
Did Joey Gallo shoot at Yankees fans?
While some Yankees fans showed humanity towards Gallo, whose humility and confidence were at times almost depressing, others were not so kind. Even Michael Kay has fired some unwarranted shots at him.
Gallo’s comments, while a little nasty, don’t tell the whole story. Yankees fans didn’t bully him from New York. He didn’t fit well, plain and simple, like Thomas Carranante of Yanks Go Yard described in his last article:
“Yankees fans can get frustrated with Gallo for his time in New York and with every harrowing story that describes his success with the Dodgers (and no doubt it will anytime he does something positive). But that’s the fault of the reception. They tried putting a square pin in a round hole after being told it was a bad idea, and they paid for it in more ways than anyone could have ever imagined.”
Gallo improved slightly with the Dodgers in a small sample size. In just six games, he’s hit .267/.267/.533 with a home run and four hits in 15 at-bats.
Without the constant distraction of failing to live up to others’ expectations, perhaps it can serve as a burden on Gallo’s shoulders.
