Diane Keaton on saying no to psychedelics and her failed music career

Welcome to this week’s “Just for diversity.”

In case you haven’t checked it out Diana Keaton‘s Instagram feed, you really should. The 76-year-old Oscar winner entertains her 2.1 million followers with a series of video posts. Some of my favorites are a photomontage of famous men – Justin Bieber, Little baby, Oscar Isaak and Kodi Smit McPheeto name a few – set to “It’s Raining Men,” and another explaining why she prefers almonds to walnuts while showing off her snack cupboard. In April, Keaton’s “Spring Cleaning” video featured her in one of her signature black-and-white ensembles, a hat and studded black leather gloves, as she rummaged through a closet for items to donate to Goodwill.

“There’s something wrong there, but I’m really happy to be a part of it,” Keaton says of her popularity on Instagram. “I like it. And I was able to play around with things.”

I spoke to Keaton for this week’s Just for Variety podcast ahead of the release of her latest movie, Mack & Rita. In which Katie Aselton-directed comedy, a 30-year-old influencer named Mack (Elizabeth Lail) transforms during a visit to a shaman in Palm Springs (Simon Rex). The film follows Rita as she befriends a group of older women as she searches for the shaman to reverse his magic.

Talking to Keaton was a great time. It was maybe the most fun I’ve ever had during a Just for diversity” Interview. And that says a lot because I always enjoy the podcast.

I keep telling people this is kind of a Lucille Ball moment. It’s the same physical comedy. It’s stupidity.

Many Thanks. That’s really very kind of you. Yes, it was fun.

How did the pitch come to you? Was it “So there’s a woman in her 30s, and she must be in her 70s, and you’re the woman for us”?

Here we go! I’m ready to accept that – actually with gratitude.

Do you remember when you were 30? Did you say, “What will my life be like when I’m in my 70s?”

No I was too scared and I was too worried about, oh I gotta get a job here and act there.

In a scene one of Rita’s friends [played by 91-year-old Lois Smith] gets impatient when he’s unwrapping presents at a party and someone says, “She’s old, so every second counts.” There’s such a sense of self-confidence because you’re obviously a group of women of a certain age.

Of course. What should I do? Upset about it?

In the film, Rita makes mushrooms. When was the last time you took mushrooms?

No thank you! That was never something I even bothered with. I missed that. I’d rather have just a glass of wine with ice in it. I don’t want to go there. I like ice cream and it’s fun, but no, it’s not fun. That’s scary. I don’t want to do this.

How fun is it to act like you’re on mushrooms? Is it just like, ‘Go crazy!’ Actors also say that it’s very difficult when you have to perform drunk. That is not easy.

I’m sure you’re right about that. But just eating mushrooms is like being an idiot in my opinion. That’s all. I’m best at being an idiot. I don’t want to let go of my idiot.

I noticed that you also referred to yourself as an “idiot” in another interview.

It’s true. It’s totally true.

Why are you saying that?

Because I am, somehow. part of the family property.

Have you ever been offered a role in a superhero film?

These gloves alone are perfect for a superhero movie.

Do you think anyone would? I do not think so.

If Diane Keaton calls Marvel and says, “I want to be in a superhero movie,” then Diane Keaton will be in a superhero movie.

There is no possibility. i am not the right person

You’re wearing a cape and a superhero suit?!

You’re the worst person I’ve ever met. [Laughs]

I imagine you probably have a couple of capes in your closet that would be perfect for the MCU.

you lost your mind

Do you remember the first audition you attended?

Yes. It was junior college and it was for Carousel. Do you know this song? [She sings a couple of lines from “Mister Snow.”] i made this song You cast me.

You almost released an album in the late 70’s.

urgh It was not good. You don’t want to experience that.

I think you should do a musical superhero film.

Keep your mouth shut. Who are you by the way? [Laughs] You are crazy.
