Destiny 2 fans are heartbroken after the latest mission sets the stage for Lightfall

We’re two weeks away from the Lightfall expansion, and Bungie is setting the stage for Destiny 2 players to dive into a war against The Witness and Calus on Neptune. A season finale mission took place today, setting the stage for the upcoming expansion, in which we see The Traveler say goodbye to The Last City. Additionally, the finale featured a heartbreaking character sacrifice that many fans suspected was staged, making Lightfall’s approach even darker.

The missed season finale is Final Dawn, and it shows Rasputin being uploaded to the Warsat network, with Ana initiating his self-destruct sequence to remove her and prevent Eramis and The Witness from destroying the Traveler.

Rasptuin’s sacrifice was difficult, especially for Ana since she was the one who had to pull the plug on him. Some fans suggest that if Rasputin hadn’t made the sacrifice, The Traveler might have saved The Last City from the blast, or if it had gone altogether and left the Guardians, the Cabal, and the Eliksni to their own devices. Regardless, it has moved away from The Last City and is now orbiting Earth.

In the final part of the latest cutscene, The Darkness explains that The Traveler isn’t running because there’s nowhere else to go, but some fans are hopeful because The Traveler believes in the Guardians and wants to fight The Witness and his approaching darkness.

With The Traveler now orbiting above Earth, many fans point out that parts of the cutscene consisted of Bungie paying homage to the original Destiny cover artwork, with the Traveler floating in space. It’s a good throwback to this cover and fans are excited to see where it will take them in the upcoming expansion.

For now, we’ve got to speculate on what Lightfall has in store for players, but Bungie is doing its best to fill in those gaps without spoiling too much. The team has said they are trying to find ways for casual players to get into the game easier, which has divided the community as hardcore players want to make sure there is plenty of difficult and challenging content to get through can become time-consuming challenges. We’ll find out when Lightfall arrives in Destiny 2 on February 28th along with the Season of Defiance.
