Deshaun Watson’s contract has angered the rest of the NFL

The contract the Browns gave to Deshaun Watson, who appeared rigged to minimize his sentence, didn’t sit well with the rest of the NFL.

There are a couple of things about Deshaun Watson’s contract with him Brown people didn’t like that.

He landed the second-biggest, money-guaranteed contract in NFL history, despite being accused of sexual misconduct by as many as two dozen women.

In addition, the contract included wording that saved him from losing significant money if he were suspended, which was definitely inevitable. Since the deal’s first year included an untouchable signing bonus and a $1 million base salary, docking play checks would hardly leave a financial dent.

Browns: Deshaun Watson’s contract has upset the rest of the NFL

According to Peter Kingthis aspect of the deal caused quite a stir in the league:

“One influential NFL figure told me on this trip that it doesn’t sit well with the league or 31 other owners that the Browns rigged Watson’s contract in a way that his suspension would result in him receiving only a fraction of his compensation for.” 2022 loses. A six-game suspension, for example, means Watson would be docked six-eighteenths (there are 18 game weeks, including bye) of his $1.035 million salary, or $344,655. So if Robinson’s suspension stands with no additional fine other than six game checks, that means Watson would lose 0.7 percent of his $46 million total compensation that year. This is almost indescribably absurd. I expect [appeal designee Peter] Harvey is said to be under pressure to fine Watson millions of dollars no matter what he orders.”

There are many players who got year 1 contracts with a high signing bonus and a league minimum salary. That certainly happens.

However, Watson’s contract contained unique language that protected him in the event of a suspension. It was obvious that Cleveland was putting things in place to spare him financially. It never made more sense as to why Watson approved the trade in the first place.

Ironically, it will likely cost him in the long run because the NFL is likely to make up the difference with greater suspension and a much larger fine. Deshaun Watson’s contract has angered the rest of the NFL
