The Cleveland Browns were looking to make some changes after a rather forgettable 2021 season. A man most likely to face the ax was Baker Mayfield. As a result, the Browns Browns decided to meet Deshaun Watson a few days ago.
After posting that, Baker took to Twitter to post a lengthy thank you without indicating that he would like to pursue his profession elsewhere. However, it was then reported that Deshaun refused to join the Browns and that Mayfield wanted a deal that got them into trouble.
Deshaun Watson signs huge contract with the Browns
However, NFL insider Ian Rapoport has reported that Deshaun Watson has changed his mind yet again and is finally ready to join the Browns. Watson himself confirmed the news on Instagram, writing: “Cleveland, LETSSSS GOOOO!! DawgPound is ready to go!“
“Important contract note for Deshaun Watson, who has been signed to a 5-year, $230 million contract. His 2022 base salary is $1 million, meaning it will come from that base if he’s suspended‘ informed Rapoport. In fact, this is a big deal. In fact, with this deal, Deshaun surpassed the likes of Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers and set a unique record.
As reported by ESPN’s Jake Trotter, Deshaun is now the footballer with the most guaranteed single-contract money in NFL history. Deshaun will get $230 million in guaranteed money, while Aaron Rodgers, who recently confirmed a deal with the Packers, will get $150.7 million.
In third place comes Josh Allen, who receives $150 million. After him comes Patrick Mahomes who gets $141.5 million and after him we have Cowboys QB Dak Prescott who gets $126 million. Dov Kleiman compared Watson’s numbers to Brady’s and proved there’s nothing wrong in saying the Tampa Bay QB is underpaid.
“Tom Brady’s base salary is just $8.925 million. Deshaun Watson just signed a $230 million contract. Brady led the NFL in passing with 43 TDs and 5,316 yards. Tom Brady is perhaps the most underpaid player in NFL history.Dov tweeted. Additionally, with Deshaun facing allegations of sexual harassment, NFL fans weren’t happy that he landed such a massive deal.
Many even called the NFL insensitive for offering him so much. It will be interesting to see how Deshaun fares next season as he is not suspended.
