Derevyanchenko: I want to beat Adames, face Munguia, then fight for the title

On Sunday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, tough middleweight contenders Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Carlos Adames will face each other in a high-stakes battle where the winner will advance to a potential title capacity in 2022.

The fight will be part of a Showtime pay-per-view card featuring a slight clash between Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz.

Hometown Ukraine’s 2008 track and field athlete, Derevyanchenko (13-3, 10 KOs), will return for the first time since losing to WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo in the 12th round in September 2020.

Adames (20-1, 16 KOs), in his most recent game, scored a third-round TKO goal against Alexis Salazar in the Davis vs Mario Barrios Showtime PPV match in June.

Derevyanchenko is highly motivated for the upcoming outing – as he believes a win will position himself for a major fight with Jaime Munguia – who continues to call for a match in 2022.

“I have a lot of motivation for this fight. That and my strength will help me. Winning this match will help my career continue to grow and take me to where I want to be back,” said Derevyanchenko.

“I feel strong and excited to face Adames. He’s a good fighter, hitting hard. But I’m ready for anything he brings. I fought the best middleweights in the world. I’ve faced powerful punchers before, so I’m not worried about his strength. I researched Adames and reviewed some of his past matches. He is a very strong warrior. I know him and we worked in training camp for what he does. I know what I have to do on Sunday night and I’ll show everyone in the game.

“Of course I need to win this war. This fight is the next step towards becoming world champion. I want to win this fight, face Jaime Munguia and then fight for the title again. My dream is to win the belt and that’s what I’m aiming for.”
