Debbie Allen is surprised that Grey’s Anatomy is still going strong

Aside from directing and producing the series, Allen’s second passion is her non-profit organization, the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. Following the recent opening of the academy’s first-ever middle school, the organization has just found a brand new home in the Shonda Rhimes Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles.

That was on the opening night of the center Jada Pinkett-Smith made her first red carpet appearance since Will Smith‘s Oscars incident, and Allen was thrilled to see her.

“Yada came. I was so happy Jada came,” she said. “She was just beautiful. This is my child.”

A longtime professional dancer who has graced Broadway and screens large and small, Allen has much admiration for the many women she has helped pave the way for, including Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson and more.

Misty Copeland was the impossible dream for all brown ballet flats around the world. I wanted to be a ballerina, they said to me, ‘No, no,'” she said. “I’m just proud of them all.”
