Death of Lisa Marie Presley: Daughters inherit Graceland, public memorial has announced

A public memorial to Lisa Marie Presley is planned at Graceland.

The announcement comes amid confirmation that the Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee, will go to Lisa Marie’s three daughters.

The singer-songwriter died last week aged 54 after being rushed to hospital after an apparent cardiac arrest.

The death of the King of Rock and Roll’s only daughter put ownership of the estate in question after Lisa Marie inherited the estate after Elvis Presley’s death in 1977.

On Thursday (local time) Lisa Marie was hospitalized and died as a result of cardiac arrest. Her mother, Priscilla Presley, confirmed the news.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the devastating news that our beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has passed away,” Priscilla told People.

The memorial service for Lisa Marie is open to the public and will be held on Jan. 22 at 9 a.m. on the front lawn of Graceland’s estate, according to a statement on Graceland’s website.

“In lieu of flowers, the family encourages anyone wishing to send to do so in the form of a donation to the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation,” the website reads.

The Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation supports arts, education and efforts to benefit children in the Memphis area.

Elvis bought the property in 1957 when he was just 22 years old.

He died of cardiac arrest at the mansion in 1977 and is buried on the grounds of Graceland, which is now a museum and a popular tourist attraction.

Lisa Marie is also buried there, along with her son Benjamin Keough, who died by suicide in 2020 at the age of 27.

The Graceland estate was held in trust for Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s only child, until her 25th birthday.

“Lisa Marie Presley became more closely involved with the management team of the Elvis Presley Trust and its business unit, Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. (EPE), of which she was the owner and CEO until February 2005, when she took a keen interest in the company,” it said the Graceland website.

Had ‘so much to do’

Over the weekend, grief expert David Kessler shared a photo of himself and Presley on his verified Instagram account, writing that she had asked him to accompany her to a celebration of her late father’s 88th birthday in Memphis days before her death.

“She had countless invitations for the weekend, but for her there were only three important ones: being at her father’s birthday party, spending time at her son and father’s graves after the tours left Graceland, and meeting a recent woman grieving mother.” Kessler wrote.

Lisa Marie has been active in helping others deal with their grief, he wrote, including co-hosting grief groups with him at her home for other bereaved parents.

Kessler wrote that her time attending Graceland was “so much fun and optimistic” and that “Graceland was her happy place and the staff who all knew her shared that she looked so much better.”

“She looked more peaceful and was so proud of the Elvis movie. On Saturday night we sat at the graves of her father and son,” he wrote.

“We spoke about the heartache she grew up with and the more recent devastation of her son’s death. She showed me where she would be buried one day. I said it was a long time… and she said yes, I have so much to do.”

Lisa Marie is survived by her three daughters, actress Riley Keough and twins Finley and Harper Lockwood.

A Graceland representative confirmed to People that Lisa Marie’s children will inherit the property.
