DC area forecast: A beautiful summer week with highs mostly in the 80’s

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather on a scale of zero to 10.

9/10: A very nice summer day with slightly below average temperatures and humidity.

  • Today: Mostly sunny. Maximum values: 81 to 86.
  • This evening: Increasingly wet. Low: Near 70.
  • Morning: Hot, humid, late day storm possible. Treble: 90 to 95.

This summer has been easy for us so far and we’ll try to escape mid-July without some really brutal heat and humidity. Although Tuesday will be warm and muggy, the second half of the week promises slightly below average temperatures. Tuesday and perhaps Sunday offer the week’s best chances for late-day storms.

Today (Monday): The week starts off brilliantly with sunshine and highs in the low to mid 80’s. Note that the average high temperature is currently 90 degrees. Humidity is also slightly below average with dew points around 60. A light southerly breeze (approximately 5 to 10 mph) will blow into the region in the afternoon. Confidence: High

This evening: The southerly breeze increases overnight humidity (dew points rise into the 60’s) and also slows the temperature drop. Night time lows are in the low 70’s downtown and in the upper 60’s in our cooler locations. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): This is the type of weather you would expect in mid-July: hot and humid with a chance of late-day storms. Under partly sunny skies, highs are mostly in the low 90s, but moderately high humidity (dew points near 70) will feel a few degrees hotter. The late-day storm probability is about 30 percent thanks to an approaching cold front; Some of these storms could be violent, with damaging winds as well as downpours and lightning. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Some isolated storms – possibly severe – are possible in the evening (40% chance); otherwise partly cloudy and muggy with lows around 70. Confidence: Mid-High

Tuesday’s cold front is washing directly south Wednesday. It might be close enough to trigger a storm or two – particularly in our southern areas – but most of the area is likely to remain dry. Under partly sunny skies, neither quite as hot nor as muggy as Tuesday, with highs near 90. Wednesday evening lows range from 65 to 70. Confidence: Medium-high

Thursday to Saturday is a pretty nice looking track with partly sunny skies, moderate humidity (dew points in the 60’s) and highs mostly in the mid to high 80’s. On each of these days there is a chance of a storm late in the day, but it will generally be dry. Nights will be partly cloudy and mild with lows mostly in the mid 60s to near 70s. Confidence: Medium

The next front moves into the region Sunday, increasing chance of storms later in the day. It’s very warm and humid up front, with highs near 90. Confidence: Medium
