Dave Roberts’ Latest Statement Will Worry Dodgers Fans

With Kenley Jansen signing with the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts discussed who he intends to become closest to for the 2022 season.

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a big splash when they signed former Atlanta Braves first team player Freddie Freeman to a six-year deal. However, the Braves did acquire a player from the Dodgers in the form of finisher Kenley Jansen, with whom they signed a one-year contract. With Jansen not showing up, Dodgers fans are wondering who will be the closer newcomer.

Manager Dave Roberts was asked if he could think of a specific pitcher to take on Jansen’s role in the cowshed. Here is his answer, provided by Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

When looking at the group’s depth chart, Blake Treinen gets even closer. Last season, Treinen scored an ERA of 1.99, WHIP 0.982, 85 shots and seven saves in 72.1 runs (72 games).

Even so, Roberts said he doesn’t know “whether that’s the right answer.”

Last week, h/t Plunkett’s Orange County RegisterRoberts says he has no plans to have an exclusive close, expressing his confidence in the painkiller he has in the bullpen to fill in. Based on his comments on March 26, he looks set to stick with that plan.

Jansen had a 2021 season where he scored a 2.22 ERA, 1,043 WHIP, 86 strikes, 36 walks and 38 saves in 69 games (69.0 innings). The Braves signed him to a one-year contract where he would be paid $16 million.

When it comes to who will replace Jansen, that won’t be an option. That could be a more rigorous strategy of each committee employed by Roberts throughout the 2022 season. Dave Roberts’ Latest Statement Will Worry Dodgers Fans
