Early this morning, Bandai Namco and From Software announced that all servers for Dark Souls Remastered, 2, and 3 has been temporarily closed because of “problems with online services.Although the publisher did not share further details, it is reported that the “crash” was a recently publicized PC exploit that allowed a malicious hacker to hack into your game and then run code from it. remote on your PC, effectively taking control of it.

Yesterday, a post on Elden Ring subreddit announces that a remote code execution (RCE) exploit has been discovered. These types of exploits are annoying because they allow hackers to take control of your computer, allowing them to stack your computer, steal sensitive data and files, or activate malware.

Mining is only available on PC and does not work on Dark souls The game was released on consoles.

The Dark souls RCE mining was seen in action two days ago in one Dark Souls 3 direct. Twitch user The__Grim__Sleeper was playing a game, and after being hacked, his game crashed and a text-to-speech narrator started speaking. Just to be clear, The Grim Sleeper has no control over this and is shocked when it happens.

In Dark souls community, it is believed that the person responsible for the hack of that stream is not a malicious hacker, but instead, someone who has known about the exploit for some time. Reportedly, they tried to contact From Software about RCE mining but feel ignored by developers and publishers. To get more attention and possibly push From Software to action, it is believed that users used the exploit on a live stream.

According to a post on Dark Souls 3 subreddit, Blue Sentinel, a fan-developed anti-cheat software for the game, has been updated to stop this exploit. It also explains that early reports that the exploit was leaked may not be accurate, with speculation that only about four people directly related to Blue Sentinel knew how to carry out this nasty hack. .

Kotaku contacted the publisher about the exploit and the PC servers stopped working.

Part of the fear surrounding this exploit is the theory that it could work in Elden Ring, due to how similar the technology used in that game is to previous From Software titles. The hope is that by revealing the exploit now, before the game is released, it can fixed before Elden Ring released next month.

Bandai Namco seems to have noticed this issue. It responded to a Reddit post about Dark souls RCE, says: “Thanks very much for the ping, a report on this topic was sent to the relevant internal groups today, information greatly appreciated!”

And now the server for all Dark souls PC games are currently down, there is no word on when they will return. While Bandai Namco hasn’t confirmed this outage is a result of this exploit, it looks very likely.
