Video game acquisitions continue. The first Xbox was set up to get Activision Blizzard with a value of nearly 70 billion dollars, then PlayStation moved to scoop up Bungie for $3.6 billion. Tencent is no stranger to big acquisitions either, and it just added another company under its leadership.
Polish publisher 1C Entertainment has been fully acquired – the deal ended in November last year according to a Press Release. 1CE is known for publishing books like King’s Bounty, Men of War, and Space Rangers, and its subsidiary QLOC has a number of killer credits under its belt. QLOC handled the Dark Souls remake, and it also supported the development of other major franchises like Devil May Cry and Resident Evil. Here’s another in a long list of China-based Tencent acquisitions: it chose Developer Returns to 4 Blood Turtle Rock Studios in December 2021 and Game Inflexion by developer Nightingale just days before this QLOC acquisition was announced.
Mentioning Tencent’s position serves a purpose here – 1CE is Polish, while its parent company is Russian. Tencent did Not get the latter, and given the current Russo-Ukrainian situation, that’s an important distinction. Game industry called to action as a result of the Russian invasion, with some Ukrainian developers calling for a troop withdrawal.
