Daredevil’s views skyrocket on Netflix after the character’s debut in the MCU

Today, in news that will not surprise anyone, it is reported that Netflix’s views Daredevil batch increased last month. AV Club reported that, according to Nielson, Daredevil was the eighth most watched show on the streaming platform for the week of December 20-26 with nearly 195 million minutes watched. Not bad for a show that was canceled almost four years ago.

The reason for this spike in viewership must be pretty obvious. This is around the same time Charlie Cox made his debut as Matt Murdock / Daredevil in the MCU in Spider-Man: There’s no way home, anything else Marvel Fans have been clamoring to watch for years. And Cox isn’t the only one. Week of Daredevil’s the highest number of views coincides with the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin on Hawk Eye.

So yes, out of course many people watched Daredevil afterward. (I may have been one of them.) Considering these are characters we haven’t seen on screen in years, that means people might want to revisit the ultimate adventure. their own before capturing them in the MCU. It helps that Daredevil have aged a lot; D’Onofrio and Cox put on great performances that are as powerful as anything in a proper MCU. Great to see Daredevil continues to receive the recognition it deserves.

D’Onofrio recently talked a bit about Marvel decided to cancel Daredevil and other Netflix Marvel shows, which he thinks Disney was planning to start its own streaming service at the time. It makes sense even if it’s a bitter pill for both fans and the creators of those successful shows to swallow. Why help your biggest competitor if you can get the point across for yourself? If anything, these numbers suggest Disney made money for that reason.

Lucifer is the most streamed show in the US in 2021

In other ratings-related news, Nielson also released a list of the most streamed shows of 2021, with Netflix Lucifer take the crown of hell is the most watched show of the year on any streaming platform. The film released its final installment in 2021 and viewers have come to support. Each Limit line, Lucifer reached 18.1 billion minutes watched, making it the undisputed streaming king of the year.

Runner-up is Squid fishing game, which raked in 16.4 billion minutes of viewing in nine of its much shorter episodes. Interestingly, only 15% of Squid Game’s numbers include US audiences watching subtitled versions of the show in Korean. The rest watched the English dub of the series, which I didn’t even realize was something?

Out of the top 10 streamed shows in 2021, the only one not airing on Netflix is The story of the maid on Hulu, ranked 10th. Ted Lasso on AppleTV+ and WandaVision on Disney+ came in at 12th and 14th respectively. Those are the only real challenges to Netflix’s dominance.

The story is completely reversed, however, if you watch the movie. Of the year’s top 15 original streaming movies, 11 were released by Disney+, with Luca, Moana, Raya and the last dragon, and Frozen 2 at the top of the list and a host of other kids movies and Marvel content throughout. Netflix already has Red Notice in fifth place, Mitchells Vs. Machine at number nine, and We can be heroes at position 14. Amazon’s only original entry in either listing is Tomorrow’s battle, ranked 12th for film.

It’s also important to note that Nielsen doesn’t include HBO Max.

The streaming wars continue. With Dragon’s House, Rings of Power, Strange things, and more to come this year, who can say what the list will look like in 2022.
