The start of the race was in the hands of Charles Leclerc after the start of the race was delayed by almost an hour due to very heavy rain. However, Leclerc led the race after starting first at the rolling start behind the safety car. Soon some of the cars switched from rain tires to intermediates and set the fastest laps, as did Leclerc’s Ferrari. Around the same time, Carlos Sainz announced that he would switch directly to slicks.

Within a few laps, cars behind the starting grid began to bring slicks into the pits on hard tires. Interestingly, Charles Leclerc, who had just pitted for Intermediates, was asked to come in as well and then asked to stay out once inside.

Leclerc didn’t have time to stay out and had to pit hard, resulting in him moving from P1 to P4 in no time. Charles raged on the radio that his engineer should call him up for the wrong strategy, causing him to lose places to his rivals and soon the two Red Bulls were also pitting hard but not losing a position to Charles.

Leclerc loses the lead just before the red flag.

Despite Leclerc losing positions, a virtual safety car was deployed and almost immediately the safety car was deployed after Mick Schumacher crashed at the pool chicane and his car was split in two. The race was stopped after a few laps under the safety car. Many of the drivers appear to be changing their tires as they are allowed to do so in red flag conditions and this might as well offer Charles an opportunity to overtake and finish below the podiums.

It is infamously said that Charles Leclerc bears the ‘Monaco Curse’ as he has never finished a race in his own country; DNFs in 2018 and 19 and a gearbox failure just before the start of the race in 2021 made it possible.

As the race restarts with a rolling start, Verstappen has donned a new set of mediums and Leclerc is in P4 on a used set of hards.
