Dally M medalist Jack Wighton is considering leaving the Canberra Raiders after turning down contract option for the 2024 season

Jack Wighton could be out for the first time in his NRL career after telling Canberra he plans to test the open market.
The 2020 Dally M medalist has told the Raiders he will not be taking an option on his contract for the 2024 season and will instead be looking for a new, presumably long-term, deal.

That doesn’t mean Wighton, 30, will leave the Raiders as the club prepare to fight to retain their superstar, a one-club player.
CEO Don Furner acknowledged that this could be the five-eighths company’s last major order and encouraged it to evaluate its options.
“Jack has been incredibly loyal to the Raiders over 14 seasons and has never tested himself in the market, he has always championed this club,” Furner told AAP.
“Jack has a very young family and this could be his last contract so he should make sure he’s 100 per cent comfortable with his decision.
“The Raiders will do everything they can to keep Jack as a one-club player and will continue to discuss a package with his management to keep him.”
Wighton, a world champion with Australia and a NSW State talent, made his debut with the Raiders in 2012 and ranks sixth on their list of all games.
He signed a five-year deal with the club in early 2020 but had individual player options for 2023 and 2024, which he had to trigger by Round 10.
Wighton will miss the next two games after being charged with second-class dangerous contact for shooting Jackson Hastings.
