‘Dahmer’ LGBTQ tag: Netflix removes category after fan backlash

Netflix has removed the LGBTQ tag from its Ryan Murphy-created Jeffrey Dahmer limited series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Starring Evan Peters as the notorious serial killer, the show launched on the streaming platform on September 21 and has been categorized under LGBTQ Day for at least two days. A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed this diversity LGBTQ Day was officially removed by Friday 23 September.

The decision to categorize “Dahmer” as LGBTQ content sparked controversy on social media, with many subscribers condemning Netflix for the decision (via the Los Angeles Times). The tag is typically used to highlight shows like Heartstopper and Sex Education, both of which portray LGBTQ characters and issues in a positive light. “Dahmer” technically features an LGBTQ character since the serial killer was a gay man, but as one subscriber on TikTok wrote, “That’s not the portrayal we’re looking for.”

“Netflix, I beg you to please reconsider using Dahmer with the LGBTQ tag, particularly as one of its tags right when you open the app,” another subscriber wrote on Twitter.

All TV series and movies on Netflix are sorted into categories to power the streaming platform’s search algorithm. “Dahmer,” for example, was initially categorized as “LGBTQ,” in addition to “ominous,” “psychological,” “horror,” “vintage crime,” and “somber.”

Since launching on September 21, “Dahmer” has been a ratings hit for Netflix with 196.2 million viewers in its first week. The reviews were less friendly. Variety TV critic Caroline Framke slammed the series for being “predictable,” adding, “It’s a gritty, sepia-toned slog that rarely justifies its own existence.”

The removal of the tag is far from the only controversy that “Dahmer” has courted since its debut. Family members of Dahmer’s victims have condemned the series, and Errol Lindsey’s sister, Rita Isbell, told Insider, “It’s sad that this tragedy is all they do to make money. That’s just greed.”

Netflix didn’t respond diversity is multiple requests for an official statement on the matter. Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is now available to stream.
