Cynthia Erivo on the deeper messages that inspired Roar

At first glance, RoarThe Woman Who Found Bite Marks on Her Skin is a thriller about a mysterious disease. But as the episode progresses, it becomes clear that Ambia is eating something else.

When Cynthia Erivo said E! News, her episode of the Apple TV+ Anthology series explores the guilt women feel trying to balance motherhood, careers and even their own relationships. “Turning what would normally be a conversation into a reality, into a physical manifestation, is a really clever thing,” she explained. “I think most people can understand that, even if you’re not a mother or a parent.”

She noted that using “Fantasy [and] Horror” emphasizes how deeply women are affected, saying that sometimes you forget that “mothers are still human”.

“They still need space to let go, and they still need moments where they can just be themselves and not mom,” Cynthia said, before acknowledging the difficulty of relinquishing that responsibility for even an hour. “Sometimes when moms allow themselves that, it can sometimes lead to guilt because they weren’t there for something or missed something.”
