Cynthia Calvillo is the fighter to watch out for

Cynthia Calvillo must defeat Libra and Nina Nunes to ensure she stays in the UFC roster.
The UFC is back with another event, this time with a big bantamweight affair in between Marlon Vera and former champion Dominick Cruz. As these two men try to earn their place in the 135-pound division, there are other fighters looking to further their dream of becoming a UFC champion. Cynthia Calvillo is one of those individuals, and she’s trying to reverse a rough skid and potentially retain her place on the UFC roster.
When Calvillo joined the UFC in 2017, she took promotion by storm. She reaped three straight wins and many wondered if she would be a potential title challenger. Unfortunately, things started to fall apart with a fight against former and eventual champion Carla Esparza at UFC 219. She would lose weight, drop that fight, and test positive for marijuana metabolites.
Calvillo responded briefly, but the situation would never settle down as she would miss weight twice more in three fights. Her 3-1 run after losing to Esparza had people wondering where she would end up in the UFC women’s divisions. Questions as to whether she was a flyweight or a strawweight followed with no clear answer.
The move to 125lbs didn’t bode well for Calvillo as she rides a Three-fight losing streak. Another defeat could see her forced out of the organization and at the age of 35 there must be a growing question as to how long she will retain her sporting ability.
Nina Nunes is in a similar position in her career
If Calvillo wants to turn things around, she has to pull through Nina Nunes. Nunes is at a similar point in her career. She dropped her last fight upon returning to active competition, losing the last two overall.
Calvillo’s fight begins on the scale as another missed weight could make it easier for the UFC to cut, win or lose. Another loss does not bode well as the UFC continues to build its roster through channels such as Dana White’s Contender Series. Calvillo needs to prove she’s a worthy name to stay on the list and that she’s got one last run in her.
