Cubs, White Sox honor 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s debut

CHICAGO — For Major League Baseball, April 15 will always be a day to celebrate, especially in 2022.

On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the league color barrier when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers versus the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. The moment is commemorated each season, including Friday’s 75th anniversary of MLB’s groundbreaking moment.

League-wide, all players will wear Robinson’s No. 42 during Friday’s games, including the White Sox contest with the Rays at Guaranteed Rate Field and the Cubs-Rockies game in Denver.

Individual players also have their own tributes, including Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward, who will join others in The Players Alliance to donate Friday game day pay to charity.

Tim Anderson will proudly wear the number 42 for the White Sox, having participated in a number of Robinson tributes over the years with the franchise. The 2021 All-Star was also prominent in the Chicago community, continuing Robinson’s legacy while expanding the game in inner-city neighborhoods.

The importance of doing this to honor the Hall of Famers and teach a new generation what he did 75 years ago is not lost on him as he takes the field tonight.

“I think the more they know about him, the more they will learn and understand what kind of man he was and what he meant to people, what he meant to the game and really to everyone,” Anderson said on Friday. “So I think the faster you learn, the better chance you have of understanding that.”

The White Sox will honor a number of people ahead of their Friday night game against the Rays at Guaranteed Rate Field. Illinois Army National Guard Assistant Adjutant General Brigadier General Rodney C. Boyd, the first black officer to hold the position, will pitch the first pitch along with Chicago historian Sherman Dilla Thomas.

Boyd is also honored as “Hero of the Game”.

Chicago White Sox Charities Foundation grantee Patrik Nwankpa is honored along with 2022 Jackie Robinson Diverse Business Partner Program Awards winners, Complex Network Solutions and Lightitech.

The Cubs will hold their celebrations Monday when they return to Wrigley Field when hosting Tampa Bay.
