Crow’s Nest Store: Source Bulk Foods store owner blames ‘society’ for failed deals

A business owner in Sydney’s northern suburbs has released a bizarre tirade blaming “society” in part for her shop’s financial woes.

The Source Bulk Foods branch Crows Nest closed last week due to financial difficulties.

However, a letter posted on the front door of the store blamed the closure in part on society’s waning interest in forging “authentic” connections with one another.

“By now you’ve been wondering why our doors are closed… It is with a heavy heart that I have had to liquidate the business,” shop owner Nikki wrote.

“It has been a very difficult time made even more difficult by our connection with you, our loyal customers, even friends who have darkened our door and brightened our smiles for six years, some of you since our Willoughby days.”

The letter explained that the business had been struggling for some time and that the cost of living had put the business “between such a rock and hard place”.

“Small local businesses like ours, where regulars can stop by for a chat and a smile, get a hug when they’re feeling down, share laughter and life, exchange news, opinions, recipes and even gifts where someone knows your name…educate an invaluable network in our local communities,” wrote the owner.

“Such facilities become part of people’s lives and give them a sense of belonging to the community.

“They teach our children basic trades and etiquette… They’re just there and that’s a comfort, especially in these times of a lot of loneliness, depression and anxiety in our society.”

But Nikki said society is changing and her business has fallen victim to those changes.

“What I see heartbreakingly is that our society has unknowingly, bit by bit, prioritized convenience and instant gratification over the effort required to interact with the authenticity of real people, their neighborhood community, their touchstone,” she wrote.

Nikki and her team Esther, Kira and Chelsea said they missed their kind customers.

“You were our community. Our goal. Our confirmation. You were the very best thing about running a small business,” she said.

“Thank you for supporting us, caring for us, loving us.”

Nikki concluded the letter by urging customers to say hello to the community and reminding locals of the importance of supporting small businesses.

The store officially announced its closure last Thursday in a social media post.

“We would like to thank all of our customers for their support and hope to see you soon at one of our other local stores or shopping online,” a statement read on Facebook.
