Defending featherweight champion Bellator and former UFC, Strikeforce and Invicta FC champion Cyborg visited this week’s episode of MMA Fighting’s Portuguese podcast Trocacao Franca to discuss the next steps in her career after the 92-second knockout Sinead Kavanagh in Bellator 271.
Harrison, the two-time Olympic gold medalist holding a perfect 12-0 record since turning professional, recently became a free agent after winning his second PFL tournament. in 2021. With the MMA world uncertain where Harrison’s next. , Cyborg hopes for a super fight between the two champions – even if Harrison chooses to stay under the PFL banner.
“I believe this fight with Kayla is possible, but I don’t believe she will leave the PFL,” Cyborg said. “I believe the UFC won’t pay for what she makes, and I don’t know how it will with Bellator, but I don’t think she’ll leave. [PFL]. Either way, we can do cross-promotion, [Kayla] represent the PFL and I represent Bellator.
“I think this fight has to be like in boxing, with side A and side B. Kayla has been fighting on ESPN for two years and has 50,000 followers? I don’t think she has won the hearts of fans yet. I don’t think she has fans to support her. There has to be an A side and a B side like in boxing, but I had no problem doing this fight. I believe it will be a great battle. ”
Cyborg said she would be willing to put on up to 155 pounds in a potential fight with Harrison and that such a situation would be “better” for her as she wouldn’t need to lose weight. More than anything, she simply hopes it doesn’t turn into a Cyborg vs. Ronda Rousey scenario, in which both boxers dominate their weight classes for years but never actually get a chance to meet in the cage.
“Ronda never wanted this war. In fact, Kayla is doing what Ronda did,” said Cyborg. “If you think about it, Ronda started talking about me when I was a Strikeforce champion, trying to tarnish my image, trying to say a bunch of things, because people didn’t know who she was. . And then people started to know who Ronda was. And Kayla is on the same path. She’s trying to talk about me and say my name so everyone knows who she is. Thank God I never needed that. I always try my best inside [cage]. ”
Cyborg admits that Harrison is “a good professional” in the judo world and someone who is “getting better with every match” in MMA, but she said, “in reality, you’ll just see if you Is it better when you fight someone [at the top]. I think it’s a big challenge. ”
“Ronda’s judo is more dangerous than hers,” said Cyborg. “From what I’ve researched about Ronda’s game when I was about to fight her, Ronda’s game is more dangerous because she’s more of a finisher. She defeated her opponent and [had] sent them, unlike Kayla’s game. “
An experienced striker competing in wrestling and wrestling tournaments, Cyborg doesn’t mind the risk of being knocked out by a skilled judoka.
“I am a black belt in jiu-jitsu and I have no problem getting to the ground,” says Cyborg. “If you fight a judoka, even if we are working to fight Ronda, you will eventually fall. Fight judoka, fight wrestler, you’ll go down. You can’t act like, ‘I will [everything] do not go down. ‘ You will, and you have to be ready. I believe I have jiu-jitsu, I believe in my jiu-jitsu. I worked with [Rubens] ‘Cobrinha’ [Charles] for several years. ”
In the end, Cyborg believes the match will only work if Harrison decides that she wants to pursue legacy over money in MMA.
“Do you want to fight for the best or do you just fight for the money? Or do you want to leave a legacy? We will see things over time,” she said. “If Ronda really wanted this fight, it happened because she fought in my weight class in Strikeforce, when I won, and then dropped to 135. I fought three times in the weight division. weighs 140 pounds in the UFC. If she really wanted to make this fight, she’d make 140.”
