Crime in Queensland: Important update on investigation into death in light aircraft crash

A Queensland man has been charged with manslaughter over the death of a passenger in a light aircraft crash on Christmas Eve.

Police will claim the two-seat plane’s passenger, an 83-year-old man, was killed when the plane crashed on Ball Bay Beach, north of Mackay, on December 24, 2021.

The arrest follows a 14-month investigation by the Mackay Criminal Investigation Branch and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

The 66-year-old pilot was flown to Mackay Base Hospital.

A search warrant was executed at the man’s Halliday Bay home on February 28.

He faces one count each of manslaughter, flying an aircraft without a license, performing maintenance and flying without meeting safety requirements.

He is scheduled to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on March 1.
