Cowboys in trouble and Mike McCarthy should be nervous

The Dallas Cowboys are 0-1 and have been without star quarterback Dak Prescott for months. That’s bad news for embattled head coach Mike McCarthy.

Sean Payton on line 1? What about lines 2, 3, 4 and 5?

It looks like Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, a friend of former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, may soon be burning up the phone lines.

Even though Dallas is only 0-1, the Cowboys are already reeling. During the offseason, receiver Amari Cooper, right tackle La’el Collins, and edge rusher Randy Gregory all left. Then there’s the summer injury from left tackle Tyron Smith and would not sit him out until December at the earliest.

Now quarterback Dak Prescott’s broken thumb needs surgery and put him on the shelf about 6-8 weeks.

Mike McCarthy could already be in the hot seat with the Cowboys

If Dallas can’t find a suitable replacement for Prescott by the time he returns – Jimmy Garoppolio sends his regards – the Cowboys won’t find many wins in their upcoming schedule, which so far includes away games against the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles on Halloween.

Should the Cowboys falter badly enough to be removed from the playoff race by December, it’s not hard to imagine an early catch for McCarthy. This would give Jones an opportunity to hire Payton before anyone else, with an early opening rather than waiting until mid-January.

For now, McCarthy’s concern is finding a way to beat the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday. But the bigger picture shows a turbulent time in Dallas. Cowboys in trouble and Mike McCarthy should be nervous
