Cowboys are looking to bring the former All-Pro out of retirement to replace Tyron Smith

The Dallas Cowboys may be without former All-Pro tackle Tyron Smith until at least December if they’re lucky. In his steed they need a replacement.

The internal answer to replacing Smith seems to be Connor McGovern, but Jerry Jones doesn’t seem inclined to go that route. Tyler Smith, first-round draft pick, could also get the first chance.

Despite this, Dallas called retired tackle Andrew Whitworth, who immediately turned her down.

“I mean obviously there were some things with the Cowboys and the loss of Tyron Smith. It’s just a terrible deal. Such a great player and a guy I always enjoyed watching play. It was a busy day taking calls. The problem is that they call and text the wrong person. They have to text and call Melissa Whitworth and the kids because they have the final say on whether I will ever play football again,” Whitworth said per Pro football talk.

Cowboys can’t bring Andrew Whitworth out of retirement

Whitworth is on the wrong side of 40 and at this point his playing days appear to be over. He finished his career at the top, winning a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams.

So where should Dallas head next? Jones and the front office have a few outside options to choose from, by Matt Verderame:

“The options on the market are led by Eric Fisher, who has played nine seasons, including eight with the Kansas City Chiefs and then in 2021 with the Indianapolis Colts, who sustained a torn Achilles tendon. Fisher struggled at times in Indy but he remains a viable option.”

Fisher is the best tackle available, but why not just rely on Smith at this point? He may be a freshman, but Tyler Smith has received rave reviews from the scouting combine. He also showed lightning in the training camp.

He may be a rookie, but in this case he’s the next man. Cowboys are looking to bring the former All-Pro out of retirement to replace Tyron Smith
