The Dallas Cowboys have officially earned a playoff spot after the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night.
Whatever else happens this season, Cowboys going to the knockout round.
Dallas won a playoff berth on Thursday night thanks to 49ers lose to the Titans. Tennessee kicked in on goal with nine seconds remaining to beat San Francisco and award their Cowboys tickets for post-season.
The Packers are the only team in the NFC to get outside of Dallas. At 10-4, the Cowboys have a sizable lead at the top of the NFC East leaderboard but it’ll still be a relief to hear that box has been ticked.
On Sunday, they will go to Washington. A win in that contest will draw division.
Cowboys win playoff berth for the first time since 2018
The Cowboys have not made it to the knockout stages since 2018 when they lost in the division round to the Rams.
It’s been a rough couple of years for Dallas. In 2019, they led 8-8 and head coach Jason Garrett was fired. New head coach Mike McCarthy managed a 6-10 season in Year 1, though that record was heavily influenced by Dak Prescott’s season-ending injury at the start of the campaign.
Prescott bounced back at the start of the season and he helped guide the team to their 10-4 record alongside a powerful slam attack and improved defence.
Although Dallas lost their season opener to Tampa Bay, they went on a six-win streak before falling a bit short in November with losses to Denver, Kansas City and Las Vegas. Since then, they have won three games on the right ship.
Now the focus must be on getting the best playoff seed possible and being ready to make a more impression in the post-season than they have done in years past. They will end the regular season with games against Washington, Arizona and Philadelphia.
