After trading Davante Adams, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers need a No. 1 wide receiver. Could a trade for an AFC star be on the horizon?
Perhaps the worst kept secret in the NFL as the draft fast approaches is that the Green Bay Packers need a wide receiver. There has been much speculation that the franchise will finally use a first-round pick on a pass catcher to help Aaron Rodgers and talk of other possible moves, most recently a swing to trade against DK Metcalf.
But what if a candidate for the dark horse trade lurked in plain sight that Green Bay could make a move for?
Locked On Packers podcast host Peter Bukowski noted this on Twitter Good morning soccer Host Peter Schrager has said several times on the show that he would like to see the current Chargers’ Keenan Allen join the Packers. Bukowski then noted that the Chargers just paid Mike Williams big money and could save $16.5 million if they sent Allen after 1.
Packer rumours: Could Green Bay trade for Keenan Allen?
It is first important to note that this is all for now just to talk about a step that would make sense. But it makes almost too much sense to ignore the possibility, even with no recent rumors of a trade.
Allen would be an intriguing addition to Green Bay’s offense. While most people would put him on a par below Davante Adams in terms of star power, the 29-year-old resembles in many ways the receiver who now calls Las Vegas home. Notably, neither of them are necessarily fast or overwhelmingly physical players, but have found immense success due to their technical ability and distance running.
Would the Chargers be interested in giving up Allen? This is certainly the biggest piece of the puzzle to make this trade even remotely possible. But after paying Williams this offseason and approaching the need to secure the Brinks truck for Justin Herbert early in his third year, LA could start looking for more slack under the salary cap. Trading Allen would deliver.
Again, this is all conjecture at the moment. But with someone like Schrager mentioning it multiple times, and with the sense the move could have for both sides, it’s something worth keeping in mind as we delve deeper into the offseason.
