Could Jacob Trouba be punished?

In Game 5 of their first-round series, Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby was eliminated by the New York Rangers in the second half after being hit by Jacob Trouba.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were looking to wrap up their Stanley Cup first round playoff series against rival New York Rangers on Wednesday, May 11 with a Game 5 win. They seemed on track with a 2-0 win leading the second period. That lead vanished after three straight goals from Rangers, but the Penguins managed to finish the period 3-3.

But the big story on the Penguins’ side is the fact that star Sidney Crosby left in the second half with over six minutes remaining and never returned to the bench to start the third. The reason is believed to be because Crosby was hit by Rangers defender Jacob Trouba.

Sidney Crosby was injured in Game 5 against Rangers

That’s unknown to Penguins fans wondering if Trouba could be penalized for the goal. One thing that is known is that Trouba was not penalized for the game.

Even after the hit, Crosby returned to the ice for two more shifts. After that he never returned.

Penguins: Mike Sullivan makes his opinion on Jacob Trouba crystal clear

Speaking to the media after the game, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan said it was Crosby examined for an upper body injury. He was then asked for his thoughts on Trouba’s hit on Crosby. Sullivan asked the reporter if they saw the hit, then said, “You probably have the same opinion as me.”

Rangers clinched the 5-3 win to bring the series back to Pittsburgh. Crosby’s status will be worth monitoring because if he were to miss time through injury, it could seriously hurt Pittsburgh’s chances of advancing to the second round.

Crosby recorded two goals and seven assists in five games.

Game 6 takes place on Friday, May 13th and starts at 7:00pm ET.
