Conor McGregor will never be one of us again, and it ‘eaten him alive’ claims UFC title challenger

Conor McGregor recently tweeted and deleted a video that showed him laughing at Belal Muhammad and Anthony Smith while working on the table for UFC Vegas 42. McGregor’s chuckle seemed to come from Muhammad when he mistakenly believed that Max Holloway was the one. the first to beat Jose Aldo in the UFC.

That honor of course goes to McGregor, who knocked out Aldo to win the UFC featherweight belt in 2015. Since then McGregor has won the lightweight belt and appeared in the boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. He recently lost 1-3 in the UFC with a win over Donald Cerrone, two losses to Dustin Poirier and a loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Muhammad’s comment, while imprecise, symbolizes how long it has been since McGregor’s name became synonymous with his achievements in the cage. Now McGregor’s name is often seen on headlines discussing his over-the-top antics, online threats against minors and legal woes.

On his radio show, Smith recently talked about a change in what McGregor is ‘infamous for’.

“This is the second time Conor has come to me,” he said (ht MMA Junkie). “This isn’t even my fault, and I don’t care what Conor thinks of me, but I don’t know why he targeted me twice. But when I think about it, I think I figured it out. Conor has uber, uber successfully. He made more money than he could spend. He has made wealth for generations. His ‘baby’ children will be fine for the things that Conor has accomplished. What Conor never got back, was that he would never be one of us again – and that drove him completely crazy. He was–he was one of us.

“I find myself sitting at my desk wondering, like, Do you remember what it feels like to be in the gym and just be one of the guys? Because he alienated himself from everyone. I was a little closer to him. I do not know him. But I was around him and he was one of the men. Then he sold out and he started taking pictures of people and he sold his soul for all that money. That’s fine if that’s what you want to do.”

Smith went on to say that a lot of McGregor’s recent antics, including mocking the death of Nurmagomedov’s father and threatening the Poirier family, weren’t all about getting attention. Instead, Smith said, he thinks it shows McGregor is trying to prove to the world and himself that he’s still “that guy” and a fearsome fighter.

“I think it devoured him so much that he would never be one of those guys again. He would never fit into our group. He is no longer one of our colleagues. Not because we kicked him out and didn’t want him – quite the opposite.

“We want Conor to be one of us. He alienated all of us and now he wants to come back and we won’t let him in because he cuts each and every one of us. Those were the comments he made. It’s just a chance for him to try – he wants the world to think he’s a great man and we’re not, when in fact, in private and small-world situations. ours, he’s an outsider. He’s someone that no one can back down from. “ Conor McGregor will never be one of us again, and it ‘eaten him alive’ claims UFC title challenger
