Conor McGregor’s account of the post-fight brawl that transpired with his and Khabib Nurmagomedov’s camps following their UFC 229 fight has recently resurfaced on social media platforms. Speaking to Tony Robbins, McGregor tells how he initially seemed to think Khabib was just celebrating his win. Once he realized what was going on, McGregor wanted to get involved too.

He says Tony Robbins “What happened was, the fight was over, the match was over. He climbed over the fence and jumped into the crowd to make some noise, but as soon as he jumped into the crowd he ducked away. I like to call it ‘coughed up’ because they are little rats, to be honest.”

He recounts how he felt at first, saying: “I gave him my respect and congratulations, he won the match – let’s see what happens next time. I’m confident we’ll get it back, let’s go one more time. I’m humbled in victory or defeat, no matter what. It’s a sport at the end of the day, a cruel sport, but it’s a sport. So I respected it, I was defeated in the night. He jumped in to cause this chaos and went on the attack, but actually he just tried to hide when he really didn’t want anything.”

McGregor stated that the situation worsened after Khabib jumped the fence and started beating members of his camp. According to McGregor, he considered Khabib’s brother approaching him a “Christmas present”.

McGregor says “I saw that happen, I got up off the ground and said ‘okay, now I’m back in the mix’, jumped on the cage, when I jumped on the cage, his brother came running and jumped on the cage too to climb in and to help him and join the fight. I saw him there and it was like a Christmas present.”

He goes on to say “He was right there, I hit him right in the eye socket and we started fighting on top of the cage. It has been resolved.” McGregor explained that when his initial fight was stopped, he initially tried to stay out of the fight, but the situation escalated again after he was jumped by two more people. Later, a member of Khabib’s camp fighting McGregor evaded security and gave chase.

McGregor received a six-month suspension and a $50,000 fine for his role in the incident. In April, he regained his playing eligibility. Khabib was also banned for nine months and fined $500,000. In July he was eligible to play again.
