A woman and her fiance have received sentences ranging from 22 years to life in prison for killing their 3-year-old son. Prosecutors say Connie Marie Escamilla29 and Kylie Mykaela Ann Beasley25 years old, previously blamed each other for Connie’s son Gilbert died of their injuries, but they pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder and torture.

Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office announced March 9 sentencing on Thursday.

Prosecutors said authorities were called to the couple’s Modesto home in 2017 about a baby that wasn’t breathing. Gilbert did not respond. First responders took him to the hospital, and staff there found him severely injured.

The DA’s office said: “Hospital staff noted serious physical injuries to the child including severe burns on his legs, bruises and abrasions across his entire body, and multiple fractures. together”. “They also diagnosed internal damage including bleeding on the brain, bruised lungs and bruised liver. Gilbert was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera for further treatment but passed away the next day.”

Prosecutors said the couple claimed Gilbert suffered several injuries in a car crash, but they gave different accounts of when this happened. The DA’s office said there is also no record of such an accident. Defendants Escamilla and Beasley also fabricated other stories about what happened to the boy, authorities said.

Prosecutors said: “The couple also blamed severe burns on his leg from hot water poured in, but doctors determined that could not cause the injuries they saw. “Other excuses include his falling out of bed, the blame on an unidentified man whose location law enforcement never located, and the negligence of medical professionals. The doctor performed CPR on the unresponsive child. Upon learning that Gilbert was dead, both Escamilla and Beasley admitted to being dishonest and blamed the other for the child’s injuries and death. Both were arrested and charged with the murder of Gilbert.

Escamilla and Beasley waived two years of guardianship credits earned as part of their guilty plea hearing on December 16.

“How can you let someone hurt your child?” Escamilla’s sister April Marie Garza told KOVR in a report dated March 6, 2017. “She could do anything to stop it. I don’t know what she was thinking or what this girl did.”

She said she believes her sister started to change after moving to California and meeting Beasley. Connie, who also has a 7-year-old daughter half-siblings, half-siblings with Gilbert, refusing to send pictures of the children, Garza said.
