Colts’ Quenton Nelson looks glorious in his most challenging season yet – The Athletic

Dad told him never to be soft, so Quenton Nelson never was.

Craig Nelson was his son’s first coach, and he’s always kept it honest with his youngest son: “If you don’t lose weight, they won’t let you compete.” Quenton is too big for Pee Wee football – already £115 by the time he was in fourth grade – and league officials fear he will hurt other players.

Dad won’t bend over.

“I’m coaching Pee Wee whether you play or not,” Craig Nelson told him.

So Quenton lost weight, running a cross country course at his local high school every night during the summer. When he finally made it onto the pitch, he learned another lesson about what it takes to stay. How did Quenton Nelson become so tough? Because his father forced him to do it.

He’ll take a shot in training or a game – his ankles will scream, his elbows will sting, whatever it is. Quenton will tell his dad he’s hurt. Craig Nelson would shake his head.

“You’re not hurt,” he would tell him.

“And most of the time,” says Quenton now, “he was right.”

As he got older, becoming one of the best attacking prospects in the country – Nelson received 33 scholarships from Red Bank Catholic High School in New Jersey – Craig Nelson will always point out tough players best for his son, hope he’ d remember what he lost, and moreover, what they stand for.

“If you get to that point,” Craig told his son, referring to longtime college football and maybe even a pro one day, “you want to be that guy. You want to set that example. “

Quenton Nelson never forgot that.

Not so. Not now.
