Collin Sexton gets the bag with large expansion after trading to Jazz

The Jazz landed more than draft picks in the deal with Donovan Mitchell and they’re clearly excited about Collin Sexton signing him to a new four-year deal.

After weeks of speculation about the New York Knicks, the Utah Jazz decided to go with it Swap Donovan Mitchell for the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for three future first-round picks, two pick swaps, Lauri Markkanen, Ochi Agbaji and Collin Sexton. It signals that they are going from a soft reset after trading Rudy Gobert to a full rebuild.

While the Jazz are now clearly looking to the future, they wasted no time in committing to one of the most important parts of this deal and agreeing terms for a major new extension for Collin Sexton.

Is Collin Sexton Worth His New Deal From Jazz?

Sexton missed all but 11 games last season with a torn meniscus. However, his 2020-21 campaign was a legitimate breakout season. That year, he averaged 24.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, shooting 47.5 percent from the field, 37.1 percent from beyond the arc, and 81.5 percent from the free throw line.

Sexton, who only turns 24 in January, has proven to be a dynamic goalscorer on three levels, and there’s a plausible argument that he can replicate much of Mitchell’s production. He’s not as accomplished an isolation scorer, but his pick-and-roll hit efficiency was roughly comparable to Mitchell’s in 2020-21 (64th-73rd). Sexton also performed better that season rides per game than Mitchell with a near-equal field goal percentage.

He’s not quite as dynamic or efficient as Mitchell, but he has similar qualities, is cheaper and younger and offers a lot more advantages from a squad-building perspective.

The Jazz have 13 first-round picks in the next seven drafts, along with three pick swaps. They’re also reportedly buying Jordan Clarkson, Mike Conley and Bojan Bogdanovic, which could bring them additional young picks and assets. They seem poised to make Collin Sexton the face of their makeover, at least at this stage, and right now that seems like a pretty good idea.
