Double all american’s Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula raise their first team title at Qatar Open. The underrated pair stunned the 3rd seed duo of Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens in the final to claim the title at the WTA 1000 event in Doha.
The American duo had only played their 4th tournament together but had a stellar run to the final. Gauff/Pegula upset the 6th seed Ostapenko/Kichenok and the 2nd seed Shibahara/Zhang on their way to the finals. In the summit clash, the duo had to step back from a duo to prevail Kudermetova/ Mertens 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.
Gauff has made her mark as a top doubles tennis player in recent times. The 17-year-old was runner-up at last year’s US Open and won three WTA mixed doubles titles before winning in Doha. But the Qatar Open is the biggest title of her doubles career to date, all of her previous wins being at WTA 250 tournaments. For Pegula, this is her second title in the year. year, after having lifted the title with her doubles partner, Asia Muhammad at WT A Melbourne Summer Set 1 earlier this year.
“I don’t think we were expecting to win the tournament“- Pegula expressed her joy after winning the title in Doha
Jessica Pegula delighted with the title, she expressed her surprise at winning the WTA 1000 tournament, considering they won their first match together just a week ago.
“We are very happy. I don’t think we’ll win the tournament, let alone 1000. We’ve said seriously before that, last week was the first game we won together. We’ve collaborated before but we got knocked out a few times in the first round. It’s good to learn our chemistry a little bit on the court and do that. That clearly paid off a lot this week,” she speaks.
Gauff was also excited about the win and glad that after several first-half exits, they had found their rhythm again. In the singles draw, Gauff and Pegula lost in the quarterfinals and third round respectively but didn’t let their single disappointment affect their doubles play. The secret duo put on a remarkable performance to end Kudermetova/Mertens’ eight-match winless streak and lift their first title together.
“I always knew that we had the potential to be a good team. We’re both good singles, and we’re both doubles with the other partners very well, so it’s like we have the tools. We just need to figure out how to use them. Finally, this week, even last week, we started to start the machine and this week it is working properly,” Gauff said.
